Spur Young Scholars

Spur is a festival of politics, art and ideas; the Spur Young Scholars Program is designed to engage the next level of thinkers and doers across our city as they learn and lead us into the next generation.

Spur Young Scholars Program has a goal to provide students of all achievement levels across the board an opportunity to experience a day of lectures and discussions at the Univeristy of Manitoba. SYS Day provides a preview of engaging and stimulating conversations for students who are yet undecided or unsure about their post-secondary studies, but are curious to find out more.

The confirmed introductory courses such as “Intro to Urban and Inner City Studies,” “Intro to Indigenous Studies,” and “Intro to English: Reading Culture,” as well as specialized courses like “When Human Rights Go Wrong,” “Canadian Immigration and Settlement,” and “”Human Environmental Interactions.”

Spur Young Scholars Day occurs in Winnipeg on Friday, March 21st, from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. This program is FREE of charge and lunch will be provided.
.
Students who apply to the Spurs Young Scholars (SYS) Program will gain:

* Invitation to a day of engaging classes and discussions at the University of Winnipeg;
* Full access tickets to Spur Festival 2014's line-up of events and talks around the city;
* Access to RBC Emerging Scholars who will facilitate and be available for questions, discussions and mentorship with SYS students;
* An opportunity to contribute to and spur the conversation to what's important in our city and community;
* An opportunity to add the Spur Young Scholars Entry Scholarship Program to their resume of experiences!

SYS would like to make a particular effort to recruit highly engaged students who face non-academic barriers to accessing post-secondary education. The Spur Young Scholars Entry Scholarship Program is an excellent opportunity to boost student confidence and to ensure them that their voice matters.

Students who wish to be considered for the Spur Young Scholars Program are encouraged to apply online by filling out a short form telling us about themselves and answering ONE of 5 Spur Questions on politics, art, and ideas, in any creative format they wish. The website with full information on the program, and the application package, is available here: Spur Young Scholars Entry Scholarship Program.

Please note that space in this program is limited to 50-60 spaces for young scholars across Winnipeg.
