2014 Manitoba Scholarship Newsletter from StudentScholarships

StudentScholarships.org encourages Manitoba high school students to apply to any of the following ten scholarships, and would like to remind those who are interested in a more comprehensive list of scholarship opportunities to visit the StudentScholarships.org website and/or sign up for the 2014 scholarship newsletter.

Most scholarship require students to be completing their final year of high school and graduating in June 2014, with the plan to enter college or university in the Fall of 2014. Students must show proof of their academic standing and answer specific questions in an essay. Please visit the websites below for more information on how to apply.

National Union Scholarships

The National Union and General Employees is offering four acholarships to students who plan to enter the first year of a public, post-secondary educational institution full-time in the Fall of 2014. Eligible applicants must be children/grandchildren, or foster children/grandchildren of a National Union member. The component union represented in Manitoba is the MGEU (the Manitoba General Employees Union).

The scholarships include:
1) NUPGE Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians ($1500)
2) NUPGE Terry Fox Memorial Scholarship ($1500)
3) NUPGE Tommy Douglas Scholarship ($1500)
4) NUPGE Scholarship for Visible Minorities ($1500)

Applications can be found by visiting the National Union website nupge.ca/scholarships. The deadline to apply is June 30th, 2014.



Variety Pat Riordan Fine Arts Scholarship

PLEASE NOTE: Only one student from each high school can apply for this scholarship. Please see Ms. Sidorow in Student Services if you are planning to apply.

Variety, the Children's Charity of Manitoba is pleased to offer the Variety Pat Riordan Fine Arts Scholarship. Pat was a long-time member of Variety and a reowned Canadian entertainer. This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded each spring to a deserving high school student who is pursuing an education in either music or fine arts at a college or university in Manitoba.

Preference will be given to applicants to have demonstrated leadership roles and passion for caring for others in their community.

The guidelines for application include:
1) A biographical essay (one typed page -- font, size and spacing of your choice) demonstrating the applicant's musical or fine arts abilities and accomplishments. Please note that this essay is weighted at 50% of total marks by the Review Committee. Submissions longer than one page will not be considered.

2) Application must include the name and weekday contact information (including email) for three references, including one musican or fine arts educator.

3) Each application must include confirmation of a post-secondary acceptance, including program selection. In the event that acceptance has not been received by the student prior to the application deadline, the application must include proof of his/her application to post-secondary institutions in the interim. Applications not accompanied by said-specified documentation will not be considered.

4) Applications to include transcripts for Grade 11 and Grade 12.

5) Please include all relevant contact information with the application.

**There is no "formal" application form. Students are encouraged to use their own format.

This scholarship will be awared to one student each year. Funds till be applied to the recipient's first year of post-secondary education and will be disbursed at the beginning of the Winter session (i.e. January 2015). Payment will be made directly by Variety to the recipient's educational institution.

Application deadling is April 30th, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. Late applications will not be considered.

Variety/MTS Leadership in the Community Scholarship

The opportunity to apply for this scholarship is currently closed.


PLEASE NOTE: Only one student from each high school can apply for this scholarship. Please see Ms. Sidorow in Student Services if you are planning to apply.

Variety, the Children's Charity of Manitoba relies heavily on volunteer and community support in order to accomplish its mandate of serving children with special needs in our province. Variety, along with funding partner MTS, as instituted an annual $2,000 scholarship for a high school student pursuing post-secondary studies in Manitoba.

Preference will be given to applicants to have demonstrated leadership roles and passion for caring for others in their community.

The guidelines for application include:
1) A biographical essay (one typed page -- font, size and spacing of your choice) demonstrating the applicant's community leadership. Please note that this essay is weighted at 50% of total marks by the Review Committee. Submissions longer than one page will not be considered.

2) Application must include the name and weekday contact information (including email) for three references, including one educator and one volunteer supervisor.

3) Each application must include confirmation of a post-secondary acceptance, including program selection. In the event that acceptance has not been received by the student prior to the application deadline, the application must include proof of his/her application to post-secondary institutions in the interim. Applications not accompanied by said-specified documentation will not be considered.

4) Applications to include transcripts for Grade 11 and Grade 12.
