Scholarship Presentation (October 17th)

On Thursday, October 17th, Peter Bass From St. John's Ravenscourt gave a presentation to students and parents about scholarship opportunities for post-secondary education. Thank you to everyone who showed interest and attended the event. A Special Thanks to Mr. Bass for sharing his wealth of knowledge about scholarships, and for allowing us to post the presentation on this blog.

TD Scholarships for Community Leadership

TD is awarding 20 scholarships, worth up to $70,000, to graduating students who have shown exceptional initiative in making a meaningful difference in their community. Each scholarship includes a full tuition at any approved university or college in Canada, $7,500 a year towards living expenses, and an offer of summer empolyment at TD.

While applicants must show academic capability, the focus of these scholarships is not primarily on rewarding for educational achievement. The key criterion is outstanding community leadership, in balance with the student's academic performance.

Students can download an application or apply directly online at www.td.com/scholarship. The website had further information about the applications, as well as profiles of the 2013 recipients of the TD Scholaships for Community Leadership.

The deadline to apply for this scholarship is December 6th, 2013.

Live Red Youth Scholarship

The Heart and Stroke Foundation in Manitoba Live Red Youth Scholarship strives to encourage and promote the attainment of higher educational goals for individuals who have demonstrated an appropriate level of academic achievement, have made a positive contribution to their school through involvement in extracurricular activities, and have made significant contributions of time and energy to the community.

Up to five scholarships of $1000 each may be granted to a graduating high school student in the province of Manitoba who will be attending an HSFM approved accredited post-secondary institution during the 2014-2015 academic year.

Only an individual may apply for this scholarship, however group efforts in planning and executing a Live Red Youth event may be used in the application process. This competition is only open to graduating grade 12 students however, any Live Red Youth events organized in the years leading up to grade 12 may be highlighted in the scholarship application.

SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA
To be eligible, an applicant must be a Canadian citizen and a resident of Manitoba, and must be accepted to a recognized post-secondary institution for the Fall of 2014.

Studnets applying for this scholarship must exemplify the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s mission to maintain a healthy lifestyle, while also maintaining an appropriate level of academic standing, demonstrating leadership skills, and a commitment to the community. As a part of this, applicants must have hosted a Live Red Youth Event, either in their community or school, and event emphasizing the following components
- Originality and creativity of event
- Funds raised for the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Manitoba
- Number of participants and volunteers
- Connecting the mission of the Heart and Stroke Foundation to the event
- Event planning (budget, promotion, volunteers, heart healthy food/beverage, activity plan)

Note that: Any student with immediate family currently employed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Manitoba is not eligible to apply for this scholarship.

APPLICATION COMPONENTS
Applicants will also be asked to summarize the following points from a personal perspective: Philanthropy and volunteerism, Heart healthy lifestyle and Leadership

National Scholarship and Citizenship Awards

The Herbert H. Carnegie Future Aces Foundation distributes annual awards to students who participate extesnively in activities that focus on character, community service, volunteerism and humanitarian causes.

There are several $1,000 scholarships that are available to candidates who meet the following criteria:
1. Are between the ages of 16 and 24 years
2. Are graduating from high school and are seeking post-secondary education at an accredited college or univeristy.
3. Are in need of financial assistance to accomplish their educational goals.
4. Are individuals who exhibit the qualities of the Future ACES Creed: Attitude, Ability, Achievement, Co-operation, Courage, Confidence, Education, Empathy, Example, Service and Sportsmanship.

All aplications must be supported by a letter from their school Principal, Guidance Counsellor or Teacher, and a letter of support written by a member of the community (a coach, religious leader, empolyer or member of a volunteer organization). These references must be able to attest to the citizenship qualities of the candidates and verify their outreach activities.

The Application Process -- University of Winnipeg

The Univeristy of Winnipeg has been a city institution for more than 40 years. They encourage their students to discover, achieve and belong. There are over 30 progams offered through the Un of W and in partnership with the U of M and Red River College. The school offers a truly invigorating and challenging academic experience to its students in the heart of a booming downtown atmosphere.

The University of Winnipeg also offers good information online about how the application and admission process works within their organization. Any students who are wishing to apply by mail or online are encouraged to visit the Future Students -- How to Apply page which will attempt to answer any questions they might have about entrance requirements, documents and deadlines. There is a link to an online application that may prove convenient to you!

The suggested application deadline for entrance into general studies at the University of Winnipeg for Fall 2014 is July 2nd, 2014.

The Application Process -- University of Manitoba

Students and faculty at the University of Manitoba identify themselves as trailblazers and visionaries, with the freedom and determination to define themselves and their future. If you are wishing to seek direct entry into a program offered at the U of M, you must make sure that you follow that program's application guidlines and deadlines. Each faculty/program has it's own criteria. There are also programs that offer an advanced entry admission -- but this option is limited to students who have completed at least 24 credit hours in applicable univeristy-level courses. For information on direct entry programs, please visit the Univeristy of Manitoba Application for Admission page

The university provides some tips and advice for students who are preparing to apply to any of the programs/faculties. It is encouraged that directions about the applications, including aherence to entrance requirements, submitted documents and deadlines are carefully noted and followed. The application process can be delayed if these instructions are not met, which could result in your application not being accepted. The early admission deadline for applications into the University 1 program at the Univeristy of Manitoba is February 21st, 2014. Make sure you check the website if you wish to apply for direct entry into another program.

Admissions and Applications -- Red River College

Red River College offers over 100 programs that allow students to develop the knowledge and experience that will make them skillful and competent members in a career-field that they will value and appreciate for many years. Students can either enroll on a full-time basis, or they may choose a program that offers distance education opportunities. In return, they will recieve comprehensive and concentrated learning under the instruction and supervision of qualified and experienced faculty. Red River College classrooms are located all over Winnipeg and in the surrounding areas, making it a convenient academic institution for students who are balancing family and/or work committments at the same time.

Rainbow Stage Scholarships

Each yera, Rainbow stage presents scholarships and school awards to high schools in Winnipeg and the surrounding area, which the goal of encouraging students to further their studies in musical theatre, thus investing in the future of the arts in Manitoba.

There are two awards offered by the committee:

Rainbow Stage Individual Scholarship Award. This award is avaiable to all graduating high school students who have demonstrated ability in choral, drama, dance, band, or technical areas of theatre. The student must be continuing their education by enrolling in a recognized post- secondary theatre program following their high school graducation. The application deadline is May 2nd, 2014. All applicants must be prepared to appear before the selection committee in late May 1014 for a brief interview and/or performance.

School Performance Award. This award is presented to schools in order to enhance the Musical Theatre program offered at the school. It gives talented students a chance to be recognized by a professional theatre company. Schools may apply for this award at least one month before the staging on their production.

The Job Yellowhead Memorial Education Fund

Job Yellowhead was a status Native Canadian who has a fierce pride in his culture, a strong Native identity, a rapier with and an enormous love for all people. He was working very hard to develop the traits of cheracter and responsibility that are criteria for students who will become recipients of The Job Yellowhead Memorial Education Fund.

This is a university scholarship that was established in Job Yellowhead's memory, and is available to Aboriginal, Metis and Inuit youth who are residents of Manitoba. All applicants must be in the process of completing, or have recently completed high school, and are planning to attend an accredited univeristy in Canada.

This scholarship provides financial support for up to five (5) years of continuous study in the fields of Liberal Arts, Journalism, Law, Medicine, Native/Aboriginal/Indigenous Studies, Philosophy, Science, Religious Studies and Business Administration. The primary objective of the scholarship is to provide funding to qualified candidates who, without the Scholarships support, would likely not have access to a university education.

The deadline for applications is January 31st, 2014.

Hockey Manitoba Scholarships

There are several awards and scholarships available from Hockey Manitoba, including those listed below:
George Allard Scholarship -- 1 @ $1500
Jack Forsyth Scholarship -- 1 @ $1000
Nick Hill Scholarship -- 1 @ $1000
Jerry Kruk Scholarship -- 1 @ 1000
Hockey Manitoba Scholarships -- 10 @ $750
Canad Inns Scholarship -- 1 @ $750
Jim Stirling Scholarship -- 2 @ $500

All applicants must be Hockey Manitoba members in good standing, Manitoba residents who are graduating in June 2014 and will be attending post-secondary school in Manitoba in fall 2014.

There are four additional awards promoted through Hockey Manitoba, each with their own eligibility requirements:

Northwest Law Enforcement Scholarship Award Program

The Northwest Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship is awarded to a secondary school graduate in recognition of their academic and leadership accomplishments and the desire to pursue a career in law enforcement.

The eligibility requirements for this award are:
- Applicant must be 18 years of age at commencement of the Plaw, Protection and Safety Diploma Program.
- Applicant must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant. - Applicant will be a graduating grade 12 student in June of 2014.
- Applicant must demonstrate outstanding qualities in the areas of leadership, communiity spirit, involvement in extra-curricular activities and a commitment to place the welfare of others above their own needs.
- Applicant must complete the application by the posted deadline.

The value of the scholarship is determined by the number of candidates that are deemed as contenders for the scholarship.
